Media; Moments & Making things happen

Hey Mediadreamerz

OMG where does the time go these days? Can’t believe it was over a month ago that I posted anything. But it’s been a fun few weeks so now I have time to sit and type away. My other reasons for this are from baking for the last so many weeks; Red Nose Day, socially and I’m still baking and have started making Easter eggs for work and friends. As I mention RND regarding work it was fun and interesting going into a production company on that Friday wearing red cosplay wig and getting a combination of ‘I didn’t recognise you’, ‘Red hair suits you’ and ‘You should wear this and other wigs to work more often’- That last comment IS tempting I admit.

For those who are curious as to what the wig looked like, here is a shot; please feel free to comment on what you think on that.

I was glad last month to be having a break in Paris for a few days and seeing a lot of media out there was very interesting to observe and speaking French too was great especially using certain phrases; Can I have a lawyer who speaks English, Where is the British embassy, I’m drunk, I’ve lost my wife (not that I need to really use that one but it’s funny to know. Amongst those phrases, I did learn others.

Once back I got straight into media work most of which is related to my job itself, I’ve spent part of my holiday days off work WORK work-shadowing in the Production Gallery and from the past 5-6 days doing this I am starting to get the hand of everything that is going on.
There is also the upcoming 48-hour film challenge that I am hoping to be getting involved in and also hopefully a film called the Mask of thorn next month which is gonna be great working with people I know and haven’t worked with yet.

I am happy to share that next month I am going to the premiere of 2 films I worked on one in London and the other in Romford which I am looking forward to and already have my outfits for those nights. The film in Romford is called Borstal, and it is on sale now, and the other is Cain Hill both of which were awesome experiences. So I will be looking forward to blogging about those nights.

Most current experience to share is being at Elstree Studios at a Creative England for the launch a something ProConnect event. As you have heard and seen that Elstree is known for TV shows like Pointless, Big Brother, The Voice just to name some nd with films like Paddington Bear, The King’s Speech, The Danish Girl and much more.

ProConnect is a program that supports creative businesses, freelance individuals, entrepreneurs. Offering workshops that cover topics like Government tax breaks and incentives, Marketing, Funding, etc. ProConnect is covering two regions; Manchester and Hertfordshire, so people in the North and the South are covered. It was interesting to hear what they offer media companies and freelance individuals and having received an email on what workshops that are happening from Summer to Autumn, so that’s something else to look forward to.

Once Easter is over and I have distributed my continental Easter treats and Easter Eggs I will be back on track to work on films and other activities for the Summer.

Media All About it, Media All About it

It feels like I have been sleeping under a rock as it has been a very long time since I posted anything. I am still buzzing and smiling at the memories of the night of the Spectre premiere, and enjoying the Vespers. As Christmas is fast approaching most of my time is going to be devoted to baking, decanting my alcohol and getting the last few bits of Christmas gifts done. In between all that I have a few media events to look forward to now and in the New Year. One I am hoping to go to is on 7th is a VFX event in Birmingham which is being delivered by Hasraf HaZ Dulull. This is a guy who has worked on The Dark Knight, Hellboy, Elizabeth the Golden Age, Poldark, The C word (I’d keep going but I would be hear to February, basically a lot of films and some TV programs). So this is something I am looking forward to, and there are more in the New Year, these can go nicely with my resolution of doing more work as an extra, specifically appearing in James Bond, then I could definitely call myself a Bond Girl.

I am also looking forward to my freelance work in the New Year as I can keep my CV fresh. Plus I am hoping to go to the Bond In Motion exhibition, I missed it last year so I am hoping to go to this one now that the new Aston Martin has been added (one I have been lucky enough to sit in, shame Aston Martin wouldn’t let me drive it out of the showroom), I can only dream for the future.

The outcome

Forgive the late response regarding what I said in my last post on my interviews, I did not want to jinx the outcome of either one, now I feel can share.

As promised I said I would let you know the outcome of my interviews.

The first interview for the assistant producers role was with Psychic Today and with it only taking me an hour and 10 mins to get my interview I used the extra 40mins I had to read my notes and ready myself for the type of question I could potentially be asked. I met my interviewer, Joanne, and the questions commenced; ranging from what makes a good producer, what did you think to the shows structure and style of Psychic Today, what could be done differently/ what are my thoughts on the shows I watched. I answered all questions with so much detail that I made poor Joanne use so much paper, I even added ideas and suggestions for the channel and the website. I was then told a little more about the role, my responsibilities, the hours and where that could lead to. Interview lasted 30mins and I was informed that I would hear something soon.

Result- I was offered one of the assistant producer roles, and a training date, but because of the position being freelance based and other factors coming to light I had to decline the opportunity.

 

The Second interview was with a non-production based company called SIS(not to get confused with the Secret Service), which stands for Satellite Information Services; the company has contracts with BBC, ITN and SKY NEWS & SPORTS. The interview was for a media assistant position, and is a permanent position. One thing I arrived 50mins early and read through the meticulous notes I had made about SIS as it had been advised that I do my research (planned to read up on the company anyway). I also looked at competencies/ situations and planned answers to potential questions I could be asked, so I am not surprised like a deer in the headlights. Once in the building I met Richard and Rory where I was taken to a conference room and the interview commenced. Rory asked the questions, there were four pages of questions and situations that I have demonstrated certain skills in, whilst Richard took notes of everything I said (I was asked other questions like what do I do in my spare time, what takes priority in my life, if I could do something spontaneous what would I do; I said have a party in the style of James Bond. I then asked my questions before being given a tour of the various buildings on site, where I met the sound mixers, graphics, producers, production managers, editors and all people in media. The total time I spent at SIS was an hour 35mins interview and the remaining time taking the tour.

Result- I received a phone call on Friday 13th of all days I hear you cry and the day I learned of the outcome. The conversation began with SIS thanking me for attending my interview and that they enjoyed meeting me, in the back my my mind I could hear the cliche sentence in my head and the word unsuccessful. However, it was not to be; because Richard and Rory enjoyed meeting me I have been invited back to Milton Keynes for a second interview.

At first I did not know the criteria for the second one, then I learned to read up more information on the company, and read up on my competencies as the interview is going to be mainly scenarios and situations I could be asked. So I spent two days before my interview reading and researching everything I could find. You may think me over-prepared but it meant that I didn’t forget anything. Well, I went for the interview this time with Richard and a lady from HR and it was roughly the same questions as before giving examples of my competencies and any questions I had. What I felt was 5 mins was in fact a 35 mins interview, and before I left I was informed that a decision would be made either tomorrow, or near to the end of the week.

Result- Tuesday I received the phone call saying that SIS wish to offer me the job. That certainly knocked me for 6 as it was an enormous surprise. As I mentioned it is a non-production job, but it gives the opportunity of using my degree, learning technical and broadcasting skills with the chance of career progression. Plus the bonus with the opportunity is it is stepping stone in the right directions and I am not too far away from the capital for future work as a researcher/ assistant director, and of course there is the potential to progress further, or work at Pinewood in the future. So I was immensely surprised and happy, and I have accepted the offer which I start on 8th April thinking it best to let Easter come and go.

The next step I am taking is to sort out accommodation in the area, researching the areas and what I am looking for, registering with estate agents and then going to viewings. If I am lucky enough to find a property before I start then that will be a bonus in my favour, but I guess its a case of wait and see.

As I mentioned this is a non-production role, but that will not stop me from continuing to work in productions if and when I can, certainly refusing to give up that dream. So most of what you see from now on will be what I am doing and learning from SIS and any upcoming opportunities.

In between all this I am planning and organising fundraising activities for Race For Life (R4L is what I call it). At least it gives me something to focus on. BAFTA Brilliance with Mr. Beckett

I hope like me you have been soaking up some of this hot weather (if you are based on the fair shores of Blighty, then I guess you have, if not hope its hot where you are).

Things are slowly coming together with upcoming media productions and projects that I am looking forward to being part of, but first I will share you my day regarding the above.

Normally my saturdays are pretty boring but today was a turnaround for me: I headed to a BAFTA event at Broadway Cinema, the last time I went to one was in October where I met the director of Warp Films. I made it after getting drenched and ended up meeting some familiar faces from previous events. It was a Q&A session with a guy called Ray Beckett, a sound mixer who has worked on over 40 films some of which we were shown clips of. The session was a case of the interviewer asking an array of questions that Ray answered and in between to demonstrate the points and address certain points. The floor was opened up to us to ask questions before heading to the bar for food, drinks and networking with everyone who attended. I also got a chance to meet and chat with Ray about films, sound and opportunities and his word of wisdom of learning new skills and playing on strengths, as well as sharing stories and tales from being in the industry. Hopefully, I have made another contact in the industry and will see what happens, one thing I am doing is learning engineering in radio with another radio station I am working with.

So its streaming sporting events, working on a feature and covering an event in Leicester and much more to come. Stay tuned as they say on the radio.

Trains, Strangers and a whole lotta networking

Hi fellow mediadreamz readers and those who follow me (to the many that do, thank you, it means a lot).

I have a great day heading to Birmingham for an event at the Library of Birmingham. As the event started at 11am I caught an early train, as I had no idea where I was going, funny thing me doing that as I ended up running into a customer I serve at Tesco and we had a good old catch-up as well as meeting a friend and colleague of his named Chrissy. Before going to find the venue I did my good deed for the day; took a lady to the Mailbox as she didn’t know where it was so I had a lot of time to spare. I then helped a guy find Queensway in Birmingham (if all fails in the TV/ Film industry, I can be a tour guide).

Got the the library in plenty of time and saw a lot of familiar faces and people which I had a great catch-up with. Spent the first hour meeting people and handing out loads of business cards before going to an induction session opened by a guy by the name of James and after being introduced to the guest speakers for the days events. Before everything started it was lunch and networking, though that was a let down of the day, a few trays of finger food and hardly anyone got anything to try. During the lunch break I got to talk to the guests who were attending, and it was during this time that I got a marriage proposal. How and why you may ask, explanation; two guys were looking for where the food was, only thing available was spicy asian cheese tarts, I noticed a tray of satay chicken and mentioned this. I was praised for my observation skills and one of the guys said ‘will you marry me, I won’t take no for an answer’. (Though I later learned both of these guys were both guest speakers and are writers in drama and comedy, guess which genre my proposal came from). It remained our private joke throughout the day.

First session I went to dealt ‘Skills for Success-Keeping your edge in a competitive changing environment’ with Creative Skills set talking about traineeships, opportunities and funding available for training up and down the UK. Second session ‘Film Finance Workshop’ was a Creative England talk where we were informed of film funding and grands to finance productions in and outside of Birmingham. The Third and final session ‘Getting and sustaining a career in the media’. It was here that I received a big shock seeing the two guys who had spoken to me who I later learned were William Gallagher who is famous for radio Doctor Who, ITV’s ‘Crossroads’ and a wide range of other drama programmes. The other guy was Keith R Lindsay, the man who proposed, who is known for working on ‘Birds of a feather’, ‘The green green grass’ which was co-written with John O’Sullivan a legend in himself. Another writer on the panel was Claire Bennett, a drama writer who has worked on ‘Doctors’ and ‘Holby City’. Out of all of these sessions this was my favourite, as it was relaxed and free flowing whereas the other two were regimental. Plus we could speak freely in the session and it was more humorous talking from all panel speakers.

Eventually the day came to an end and after hearing a summary of the day and about coming to future summit events. Then it was time to leave before heading home, and once on the train i met to people who started talking to me (I wonder if I have a face that invites people to talk to me, is there anyone else who had a face like that?) When we started talking one of the ladies told me her son works as a Art Director, and I immediately handed her my business card and it was my last one, which made to journey home even more sweeter.

So a productive day and I have projects in the pipeline and more to come soon, very soon

Greeting, Meeting, and Speaking

Hi fellow M.D followers and those that stumble across my blog.

Apologises for being away, I have been in London going back and forth helping at the LSE on some short projects and have managed to have a moment to sit, type and share. I spent last night in Nottingham at the Antenna attending the last Creative England Event of 2013. Boy, when you say 2013 it makes you take stock and wonder where the heck the year has gone, I sometimes fill like I blink and the year is at an end. Despite that it was a great night catching up with the Creative England Crew and seeing a few familiar faces of the people I worked with on projects in the past. I also got to meet local producers and directors, one who lives roughly 10-20mins from me. I went with an enormous stack of business cards and came back with a very small pile. Hopefully will get called up to help on local projects. I have more work till the end of the year, and possibly more in the New Year.

There is an event coming up on Sunday in Derby that I am attending and helping out on, which of course I will share with you, and will have photos to share too from the nights partying.

BFI Forever One Year On

I was surprised a few weeks ago to receive an email from BFI informing of a series of roadshows it would be bring across the UK, and one of the venues was Derby. This surprised me as it isn’t exactly top of the list when it comes to the East Midlands, but all the same I signed up to the sessions. It was held at an old hangout of mine when I was at university so it was great going back.

Before the events kicked off we had a networking introduction of tea and coffee with biscuits, lots of biscuits and I got the chance to meet some new people, hand out some business cards and see some familiar faces. These familiar faces I am referring to are the YSP Media team who I worked with on the sitcom episode ‘Jobseekers’ so it was great to catch-up.

Once the sessions began we were introduced to the team behind BFI; Ben Roberts Director of BFI, Eddie Berg Director of BFI partnerships, Nikki Christie BFI Education, Creative England and Film Network attended. The event was split into two the first half focused on education and how BFI and Film network are focusing their attentions on using films to educate young individuals, the programmes they have for 5-19 year olds, the impact and reactions triggered using media in education and the career choices/ placements open to young people. It was another networking session with more tea and coffee and of course more biscuits before going back for the second session which looked at Heritage and Archived films. It was here that I learned about the BFI Player where individuals can watch certain and particular films that are housed, maintained and restored by the BFI; some of which are free and others pay per view. Additionally, references were made also to workshops and future events that BFI are planning for the future.

The session ended quicker than I expected but I won’t be away from Derby/ QUAD for long as I will be going back for another networking session in December, so keep your eye on the blog and will be back soon.
