Cain Hill Campaign

Hey Mediadreamzers

Nice to be able to sit in front of my mac and type, there will be another post next week to share. This post is one of promoting and sharing; This is a film that a friend of mine shot last year and trying to reach a set target if any of could take a few minutes to check out the IndieGoGo page and help in anyway, shape or form that would be a great help. This film has had actors such as Gemma Atkinson, Michael Parr (Ross from Emmerdale) and Alex Zane has also been on set.

MK Media Networking

Hey Mediadreamzers

Its been quiet on my side of the computer screen; was in a road collision a few weeks back and have been in the process of recovering and getting car fixed. Now back on track, and the first thing to share with you is my first networking event of the year; MKNF. This being a monthly event held for filmmakers, actors and anyone who works in Media.

When I got to the venue I thought it had been cancelled as the shutters to the doors going in were down, to only realise that the networking night was across the way in another gallery. Once inside and others had arrived it was a case of saying hi and striking up a conversation, with a few ice breakers along the way. I and others who attended took the opportunity to meet and network, I especially got to meet people I am friends with on Facebook who live in the same district/ region as me. I went prepared; a tree stump of business cards at the ready to hand out. When it got started the guy who had arranged the night noted that there were a few me people, specifically me and I had to go first in introducing myself. I asked if I should stand up and some of the guys joked/ suggested that I should stand on the bar and introduce myself, oh the wit of many and yes I did laugh at the idea.

This month’s event was a mixture of video clips covering different aspects of filmmaking, such as acting, directing and editing, all featuring professionals from the industry; specifically from BAFTA. These were delivered interviews from Idris Elba, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and my favourite was from Andrew Lincoln from the ‘Walking Dead’. During Andrew’s interview he revealed how he had to change his last name, under the advice of his agent as the agent said his last name ‘sound like something out of Lord of the Rings; Clutterbuck (what a name). There was also a video clip called a Recipe for Disaster on what you need and is part and parcel of making films, which many of us can and could relate too. We cracked jokes about that; I notice there was not enough emphasis on booze, nothing on swearing or anything on smoking as it is stressful at times.

When I walked back in I felt great having met so many people who are in the same industry as me and fingers crossed I get to work with some or even all of the people that I have met tonight later down the line this year or in the foreseeable future. Well that goal/ challenge is gonna be on hold for a week as I am abroad for a break, a break abroad that I haven’t taken in, wait for it, 11 years. hopefully the people I have met face to face rather than just on Facebook and others who are not on my Facebook get the chance to work together this year or next year on upcoming productions, only time will tell.

My Week at New job

Well half a week if I am going to be picky.

Thank you to the people who have started following me, I hope what I have written and with upcoming posts interest you. I now have a chance to sit and share with you what my first week has gone.

It was great starting after Easter (I hope everyone had a fab Easter break, I know I did especially not working Good Friday or the Monday). I got to the office and met Rory and after another tour and getting ID and paperwork sorted it was off to the VT Library where work and my training began. Rory showed me the main jobs that need to be done each day; morning archiving sports footage and adding metadata to various clips, sourcing footage and getting to grips with the software and other really cool features that are part and parcel of the job. The first day ended so far I left like I had been in the building for 10mins, I guess that feels like that when your enjoying yourself.

The majority of my work is archiving, sourcing footage, responding to emails, ordering supplies etc. I’m hoping that everything I am trying learning goes in and stays there, I have objectives to complete. I also got to chat to my production manager/ mentor, Richard, about other factors and jobs I will be doing too.

I have also decided that I am going to look into the courses and qualifications available, and that interest me. Add a few more strings to my bow and open many doors.

One thing I am looking forward to is not having to work part time anymore and doing something that I really enjoy and love. Roll on next week for more learning, work, media oh did I say work.

New Year Begins-BAFTA Birmingham

Hi fellow Mediadreamzers

Forgive the lack of posts for the first month of the year; not much happens in January with pre-production. Which could be interpreted as a good thing as individuals can plan to go on holiday and/ find out what is coming up. I do have productions lined up for the upcoming months to keep me busy, one of which was a meeting in Birmingham Drama Village I met last year. Some of the production team I saw mentioned upcoming opportunities which I am hoping and looking forward to getting involved in, in addition to upcoming features.

Until these begin, it is networking events. My first one started off with a BAFTA Masterclass with a well renowned Cinematographer- Haris Zambarloukos. From my research, the man has worked on a great number of films, the latest being ‘Cinderella’. I admit within the research I was not sure what Cinematography was all about, and now I understand the time consuming and enormous task on such individual must do.

It was a good thing we had a huge lecture theatre as so many people attend the lecture. It of course involved questions from a BAFTA speaker, with a series of case clips from films Haris had worked on; ‘Enduring Love’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Locke’ all great films. Soon the session ended and it was everyone networking and I was glad to meet Haris after the session and seeing some people I have worked with on productions from last year, so it was good to catch up.

I know we are well into the New Year, but I have made about 4 resolutions one of which is to get experience as an assistant director and researcher which I am determined to achieve. I maybe heading to another event about Script Supervising, will know more next week, until I have plans in motion and people to contact.

All ‘Adrift in Soho’

I can now sit and share with you what I have been up to for the past three weeks, which involved traveling back and forth a lot. Why you may ask, and the answer is from working on a film not as a runner but as a 3rd Camera Assistant. It felt strange not being a runner as that is what my role has been on most shoots so it was nice to be working on a film with more responsibilities. The film ‘Adrift in Soho’ is a novel by Colin Wilson and the plot focuses on Five individuals from different backgrounds are brought together by chance to take one last look at a world that is about to collapse in front of their eyes.

During my first week it was a case of getting to know the crew and familiarising myself with the equipment, how to fill in camera reports for each days collected shots. Most of the filming ended late at night but I never noticed how fast time went until I looked at my watch.

The second week was something an interesting week; I was crew and I was asked at one point about an extra when we were filming in a bar for nearly 12 hours, so I was taken away by the costume department and dressed in 1950s clothes and was given a beret and a drink of flat ‘alcohol’. It felt strange that when I was not needed on set I was working and I sort of felt like I was out of my comfort zone, but was great fun.

The third and final week was pretty much the same thing going to a lot more locations and filming everything within a 12-13 hour days. Granted it was exhausting and I ended getting back to my accommodation near to 10-11pm it was so worth it. I did notice when I was helping out each day I was greeted by hugs and kisses from the camera team, the sparks and from the director too. I was just said when everything ended each week so quickly, I just hope that I get to work with everyone again the future. I am looking forward to the next film I am working on in Derby. I have also found a way of adding film credits to media productions I have worked on onto my IMDB page and it worked.

I think before I do anything else will be to catch up on some sleep before I start my next project.

How productive a week can be

Well, what a whirl-wind week it has been for media work and activities.

I spent Monday in a production meeting bringing the producer and director up to speed on everything I have done and what is remaining left to be completed. This was everything to sourcing locations to finding a generator, to contacting the actors, liaising with a company that hires out equipment to a million other tasks to see to and others to add to my list. God I love this business!

Tuesday was devoted to more media work, both pre-production work on the two productions I am working on, and co-presenting a radio show with another person who has more experience than me, and I will say two hours does go by really fast when your having fun, and the fun continued for me having my very first fitness class and although I was the newbie in the group no prisoners were taken so I did everything at the same intensity as everyone else and afterwards my legs felt like jelly.

Wednesday was spent at my local news station learning the art of data wrangling ( taking footage captured and adding them to the system and catalogued on editing software). I met the tech manager, Paul Magor, who allowed me to spend the day with three techno guys, before being invited to watch the news output in the gallery at lunchtime. Afterwards I was taken to the archive department to see how everything is added to the system and retrieved years down the line and the methods used to record footage. It amazes me to see that really big chunky tapes were used then it was CDs to small tapes to memory cards, how technology has certainly evolved. One thing that really surprised me I was invited to a meeting with the days news producer, the director, techno guy and editors for the days output and the East Midlands presenters for news, sports and weather. The surprise was seeing Anne Davis one of the presenters who I know really well, and after the meeting when I was in one of the editing suites Anne came to find me for a catch up chat and to see how I was and of course vice versa.

Before the news feed went out for the evening which I went into the gallery to see Paul took me to the Inside Out team, who invited me to come back in on Thursday to send the day with them to learn how they data wrangle footage they capture, log, duplicate, and using prelude software (excessive notes were taken so I did not forget anything).

Friday would have been a day working on a production in Leicester but they did not need me, however, I was asked to send a copy of my CV for future work with the production company as they are always looking for crew to work with them on productions.

And now I must resume my media work with Light Films, as there is a lot to do. One final note to fore-warn everyone that a month from today I will be writing to my hearts delight about a visit I will be making to the home of hammer horror, carry on and James Bond. Keep you eyes peeled

Baton Battle Day The Grand Final

Well fellow Mediadreamzers readers

The day has come for the final of the world baton twirling championship, and although I missed the actual performances of the finalists because I work (through the rest of the production crew told me the best highlight moments, one of which was Keisuke Komada, of Japan scoring a perfect 10 across the board again)  I made it in time for the team event and I made sure I did not miss it. Luckily I arrived just as the last few senior men were performing their routines and then work started. The team performances from each country were spectacular, it got to the point where I tried not to blink for fear of missing anything. After the last performance from France there was a break so the judges could total up all the scores for each country and I guess for everyone to stretch their legs, and it was dying this time I was sent on a secret mission by Myra Kirk, Head of the Baton Biz, that the rest of the crew could not know about; and all was revealed 20mins later- I was instructed to go and get 7 little batons with the UK flag on as a souvenir from us all working on recording and streaming the event.

Though one thing that surprised me was the announcer for the championship did a thank you shout out the production crew- Owen Tooth- Director, David Wayman-Camera operator, Ola Meser-Camera operator, Phil Arnold-Camera operator, Brett Turner-Editor (who heard the announcement and got up and  raised his arms in the air, and I was very surpassed that they announced my name- Production runner WOW.

Before the championship was officially closed there were additional certificates and merits handed out to those competing for 5 years and 10 years as well as some members being given lifetime achievement awards. Then the party really got started for the athletes as I heard it was a tradition that they celebrate by dancing to great tracks- traditional song of Nottingham ‘Robin Hood’, the Macarena (and at one point I thought our director when he got up and walked round the desk was gonna go onto the floor to dance, unfortunately not), Cotton-Eye Joe, Gangnam Style and YMCA and a few other tracks. And it was a wrap for us, taking equipment apart of packing it away and doing all the usual things after a production. One thing that I got for Myra that was from all the team was a box of chocolates, that she was surprised about. One cool thing we all got was a photo was the Senior Men’s winner (courtesy of Owen’s phone)

A fitting way to end the 5 days filming such a cool and breath-taking championship. Next years tournament will be in Canada and the following year will be in Sweden, I hope we are lucky enough to be chosen to go to these countries to capture it on film and stream it LIVE.

I hope I work with everyone again soon, as I had a blast and it certainly kept me fit, forget gym membership

Next on the production list is Line Producer with LightFilms, which I am looking forward to.

 

First day in the office

Hi my Mediadreamz readers, followers and those who find me

Today marks my first day in the office working with the production company LightFilms on an new and upcoming feature film, and it was even better with the sun shining too.  I guess the next question that springs to mind is who are LightFilms, answer- they are professional filmmakers who work on corporate, feature and wedding productions in the East Midlands. There latest project, ‘RatCatcher’ is a film that follows the story of three brothers who take a hunting trip in the woods in a remote snow covered area. Arriving for a long weekend away, they discover that they are not alone in the woods… For a more depth idea think of the films Rambo, Deerhunter and the Bourne films to give you a better idea. The film is being brought to life by the director Tom Wadlow and producer Chrissa Wadlow and guys they are brilliant. Other feature productions they have made are Shelf Stackers, Wasteland, The Apartment, and many more which you can check out on their website http://www.lightfilms.co.uk. The films LightFilms make have the honour and delight of going to Cannes, thats right you read correctly, Cannes Film Festival that place where the great actors and actresses attend every year, so the film will be heading in that direction.

The main tasks of the day were finding locations ready for filming a longer version of ‘RatCatcher’, so I set to work contacting properties and country parks about potentially using their locations for the film and getting all necessary information in prep. At one point I was on the verge of speaking to a Lord about his property, but my call was diverted to a member of staff. So far positive responses, all the locations I found as many of them have said let us know when you are free and call us back and we will take you round the areas we think will be excellent.

I cannot forget to mention also that ‘RatCatcher’ would not be happening without the role that the projects contributors have played, who want to be part of this incredible journey from beginning, middle and end. Being part of this awesome production has its perks; making a contribution gives you the chance to select from the list, this can be anything from having a big shout out, film screening ticket, DVDs or even getting your name on the credits with a snazzy title. One of my to do list activities tomorrow is to call a producer friend of mine about doing a news piece on ‘RatCatcher’ as it is also to create at least 20 jobs and getting others involved from start to end, so that will keep me busy with that too.

So I think the next thing will be going to the locations with camera and all and getting shots of the different areas for filming, I’m so excited.

I look forward to the next day I am in the office or as I mention going off to locations for filming.

 

Beyond the call of duty… in more ways than one

To those that follow me and those that stumble onto my blog, hello.

I haven’t had the chance to write anything for the past couple of days because I have been all over the place. I have been working on two short indie feature films; one was filmed in a cabin out in Derby and I admit if someone wanted to do a remake of ‘Friday the 13th’ in Britain, then thats the best place to go. I was the boom operator on that shoot and I laughed at one point, and you may too at this; there was a car scene where audio had to be recorded of the person in the car, so I had to go into the back of the car and hide myself. I was in the car for 40mins before the crew realised that I was still there; they had all forgotten me. Of course we laughed about it.

The next film I was involved in was being shot at Newstead Abbey and I must say what a beautiful place. Although in my first day of helping the crew DIY one of the houses I couldn’t find any parking, I did eventually. The shot was for 6 days and the first 3 days devoted to cleaning and painting a house for key scenes. When filming commenced on the fourth day I was one of the runners to be selected to go down to the lake to shot some really cool scenes. We were there for 5 hours and whilst there I learned from some of the professional canoeists who were helping with the scenes that Roger Moore once lived in the area. One thing that shocked me was the number of properties around Newstead Abbey. I also thought it was cool that I saw a Fox when on site. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to see the trailer for the film.

Following that I went to a school to help a production crew film a corporate film for school supplies that are tested out by children. One thing that made me sad was the fact that the day went by so fast. I laughed during the day when the director wanted to borrow my hoodie for the actress playing a teacher. Whilst I was taking off my hoodie I jokingly said that they could have my long sleeve top (which was cream with red strips). Everyone looked at each other and the look signalled a yes please.
So it is the second production I have worked on where a production has had the shirt/ top off my back. It was a great day and I have more still come ranging from networking events to upcoming film project. When there is more more will be revolted.

I just have to say that I have loved working with the different production crews and hope to work with them again, soon.
