vInspired, Be Inspired

26 Mar

Afternoon everyone

One is being kept busy with a film project on the volunteering I and others do at a Radio station in my area, and I hope to have the film finished before the birthday date (25th April). I enjoy volunteering, as it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling and it is immensely rewarding.

And speaking of rewarding, tonight at Camden RoundHouse is a terrific event, organised by an organisation I have found volunteering work from for quite a while; vInspired. In a nutshell for those of you who do not know, this is where 16-25 year olds can volunteer and be part of an activity, organisation or get the skills that are essential for going out into the working world, something that many employers look for and through this you get recognition. It is this recognition that many young people, as well as many groups have clocked up so many hours that they are being honoured for that tonight.

At the awards at 7.30pm tonight there will be many famous and well known artists, such as ‘The Saturdays’, Katie Piper (co-presenting) and many more. Although I helped out at last years awards asa Backstage Runner (refer to March 2012) and had so much fun, I thought I should try again, and although I was unsuccessful, I was considered for a role as a Digital Presenter. This role involved interviewing the winners and speaking to the celebrity guests and providing coverage about the event through Google Hangout, and sharing the nights festivities through the power of streaming. Due to technical problems at the venue, I won’t be able to co-present via the comfort of my home, however, I dod plan to watch the event and I hope you guys can too. You may ask the question how do I do this? Answer go onto Google hangout and search for vInspired, send request to join their circle, once accepted you can watch from your computer and if you like what you see share it with your friends and others and if you like what you see, then it may vInspire you to get involved with them, or with volunteering.

Again 7.30pm, tune in and see what you think.

Induction Day as a Backstage Runner

3 Mar

Although I had the day off work, I still had to get up early in order to get my train to London. Reason for this was a few weeks ago I applied to a volunteer event on the Vinspired website, as a Backstage Runner for an awards ceremony. I had had a phone interview a few days ago and surprisingly passed it, where I was told that there would be an Induction Day at the Vinspired offices on Saturday 3rd March. So now you know why I was up so early, for getting there on time. I made it to London in plenty of time, and then things took an unexpected turn; the Victoria Line I need to get from St Pancras to get to Pimlico was closed over the weekend, as engineers were working on the line. So after looking at the board I had to get Piccadily line to South Kensington, then to Victoria, get a bus to Pimlico and then walk to Dean House (Vinspired offices). Note to self, and to those of you if this ever happens, never ask a London tour guide where the bus stop you need is, because one guy I got decided to rudely blow me off. Although I wasn’t swearing rude, I did gave him a mouthful over asking him a simple question, and then walked off.

Once at Vinspired, I met the rest of the team who had signed up to be involved in the volunteer awards ceremony we were all part of. I also met another Backstage Runner, Emma, who would be doing the same things I would be, as well as 4 event supporters, 3 photographers and a DJ.

Vinspired doors

After meeting the Vinspired team behind the event, the session began with an interesting ice-breaker game that involved a piece of string. Now you may wonder why string, or are possibly thinking of many inventive things that could be done with said string, and the answer is this each person had to pick a piece and string and whilst wrapping it round your index finger you had to say as many interesting things about yourself to the whole group.

Once that was done we were briefed on what Vinspired stands for, what the organisation does, the awards ceremony and the running order of the day/ night. We were also told where the event would take place, however, I don’t want to ruin the surprise, so I will share the venue with you on the 22nd/ 23rd March as the whole thing doesn’t end till 12am, then we will need to tidy up and sleep. The same rule is going to apply to thelist of celebrities, numerous artists and special guests attending, fear not I will not disappoint. Another thing we all saw was a video of last years event, and we saw people like Keith Lemon, Kevin Spacey and Natasha Beddingfield, and from what we saw it looked pretty awesome when it was held at the O2.

I got to learn a lot more about the people there over lunch and throughout the day, especially when we were given the task of using newspapers and cellotape, to make a Giraffe, and you can imagine the fun we had in the two teams we were in. I can say that the team I was in won the challenge, as you can see below, it was a very funny activity, and the Giraffe dosn’t look that bad either.

Yes thats me, and its not my best shot.

The team and our giraffe!

Finally we were given a quiz on everything we had learned today and said what we wanted to happen on the night, as personal goals, and what fears we have. After getting our packs, finding out what our roles and responsibilities on the night nad that we can have a great time at the after-party with everyone there we all headed out to get home. One thing I have to say before I forget is thank you Aimme, Gary and Craig for letting me interview for my film that I am currently working on, what you guys said was brilliant and I really appreciate it.

Funnily enough, I managed to retrace my steps and get to St Pancras, and after running up escalator steps and down platforms I made it on the train for getting out of London. I don’t know if this is me but I find time goes by so fast in London, I hope that this doesn’t happen on the 22nd March, I actually want to remember the night as much as I can.

One thing that stood out for me during the day was seeing in the Vinspired office that there is a green alien there in a purple t-shirt, something that we all will be wearing that night, with black trousers and any shoes within reason. So all that is left for me to say is, bring on the 22nd March, I can’t wait to start running.

Maybe the alien is related to 'Paul'

Oh, almost forgot, the office has its own green alien and it looks so cool!

Fantastic Miss Radio Fox

1 Nov

I know I’m playing with the film title of Mr. Fox, but on this occassion it has to be said, as Liz and I have a newbie who started at Radio Fox on Sunday, and I have to admit that was a surprise for both us as we didn’t know about this. It felt good going back after about a week of being away and seeing all the new music we’ve got, I only hope we get LMFAO’s new track ‘I’m Sexy & I Know It’. If you haven’t heard it yet, go onto Youtube and listen. So instead of there jsut being me and Liz on the mic Hannah our newbie joined in, I also showed her how the system works for finding music and the enormous selection of vinyls and cds.

Because it was the Sunday before Halloween we decided to add in a few Halloween songs, both oldies and ones with a somewhat relation to. Whilst at Radio Fox I surprised Liz with a birthday cake and a toffee apple crumble as we both share the same birthday 1st November. So while on air cake was eaten and topics were discussed., and the two hours went by so fast. Though next week I won’t be radioing as I am filming an American football game in Staffordshire, which I really bumped up about, I just hope I don’t mess up and I get it right. Either way I’ll let you know

Varsity Blues are so yesterday, here come the Derby Braves

28 Oct

Despite the fog and rain settling on Derby’s pitch, last nights training session was brilliant. I have to admit I didn’t think I’d get all of the two hours training on my flip, cuz I still had last weeks footage, and no-one at the time had a computer with them(thankfully someone had a apple where all footage was put after training). Though before training started everyone had to run up mounts and back down in four lines. My first thought was thank god thats not me, I’d probably fall on my ass if I was asked to do that.

Once training began I was walking, or rather russelling around the pitch wearing waterproofs, filming the various drills and the only question I had to ask myself was ‘where do I start’. As you can see on my latest post that I took a few pics showing the drills too, and while I’m talking about American footbal I have to say the games on SKY are so much better than Channel 4 showing. As well as filming I ended up playing football (English) during this time with one of the coaches sons, and I’m surprised I was able to score a few goals. Unfortunatley, I dont’ have any pics of these antics, though I really should add some pics of myself to my blogs, so people can put a name to a face.

The best part of the evening was at long last getting footage of a scrimmage. And I must say that they are seriously full on, and no-one holds back, never stand in the way of one, thats my advice.

So now its 9-10 days to go until the Derby Braves play Staffordshre Stallions, and I can’t wait to get it all on film. Its fun watching American football on TV, but its so much better seeing it live.

When it rains, it certainly pours

10 Oct

Thats exactly what happened to me on Thursday night, in Derby. We were delayed by half an hour getting onto the pitch, because the footbal teams had their practice session extended to 7.30pm. So we ended up waiting in the pouring rain for the pitch and my god I was frozen. Eventually, when it stopped the wind started to blow and although my feet and fingers had turned to ice I was able to get some great footage to the Derby Braves training. I just have to find out about where the footage goes when I’ve got it?

So this has taught me a valuable lesson; pack waterproof clothing in the car, have hand-warmers at the ready and have extra socks and shoes for when you get drenched! I’ll also remember to check the weather forecast before I set off from now on.

GO DERBY BRAVES!

Derby Braves ROCK!

30 Sep

Last night gave me a chance to go back to my uni, as I have been accepted on a filming and editing opportunity with the Derby Braves. I know I mentioned this in the previous post, but I can now say that this role began yesterday. I was invited to the first training sessions. After getting through all the traffic of people getting home I made it, where I met Matt, the guy who posted the role on the v-inspired website. Basically Matt gave me a breakdown of what they were after, when they’d be training and playing their matches and everything else to do with American football.

Though I felt like an idiot; I have a flip and didn’t think to bring it, thankfully one of the coaches had a camcorder, so I started filming drills and other training activities, which was awesome. Along with filming I’m also gonna being editing this, so I’ll being getting key experience there and it will be something else to go on the CV that BBC North can see.

So I head back to Derby uni next Thursday, armed with my flip and photo camera to get more footage and anything else the coaches want capturing. So lets see what happens

Hut or Hike, ‘the city of dreaming spires’ and shaken but not stirred

20 Sep

Well, these are and were some of the plans I had in the pipeline, but things have changed. Not by choice but because I spent the last two weeks trying to get rid of an illness.

The reference to dreaming spires is to do with Oxford; an opportunity for an internship with a production company for 8 weeks was one opportunity I missed out on because of being ill. However, I did ask if I missed out on the internship if I can still help out on the film, to which they said ‘Yes’. So I will need to chase up the production company up about when they will be starting production work.

The first part of the title is to do with a volunteering filming and editing opportunity with Derby Braves American Football team. The good thing about this is it is flexible so I can do as much as I wish on the project. I just need to get a few details about this volunteering opportunity, what I’m filming and all the usual questions that need answering.

The last part of the title shaken not stirred is to do with the next James Bond film, and boy did I get a surprise. I contact one of the cameraman who passed on some key advice and it was this key advise that led to me getting a letter from the production manager saying that they will contact me soon to let me know if and when they are looking for Floor Runners.

Despite three opportunities and some of them being missed because of illness, as I said before, I am still continuing to find filming and editng opportunities, now that I know that BBC North are not taking anymore applications for Manchester. I have more to say, but I think I’ve said enough for one post. So lets wait and see what happens.
